The public sector is also reigning in this.  As a public sector employee – I have not had any CPD funded by my employer for more than 14 years as there is a total lack of money. There is an NMC requirement for all of us to mainain our CPD and I have done  but entirely at my own cost or as a result of giving papers at conferences.

I have just been secured a pot of £10,000 as a result of being awarded a National Fellowship which must be spent on my CPD which is great news. The next challenge isto see how I attend the courses I want to attend without it impacting on teaching resposibilities.

Hi,
I did the PG Dip at Masters level and really enjoyed it! I do feel that we are on a treadmill regarding maintaining our qualifications….I was told when I completed the course that I would not need to do anything further. Since then I have been told I need to do further study as the requirements have changed! I am very reluctant to do this as I plan to retire at 60 years of age (in 18 months’ time) and my brain is getting tired!!!!
I did the 998 back in the 1980s and I have done numerous mentorship/clinical supervision courses so I am done!

Rita - I agree with your point  about the need for PT's. But now , as I am currently doing the PT course, it is at level 7

6 full days at Uni, professional conversation and a level 7 essay.

Gone are the days of the 998!

I did the PT course at Leeds Metropolitan University but it’s a few years ago (2005). It ran from September to May and I only needed to attend the university itself for 6 days over the 9 month period, usually from 09.00am to around 16.00pm. There was a formative assignment of 2,500 words which was voluntary and a final summative assignment of (I think!) around 4,000 words. Definitely not too onerous from a time or work perspective. It was fully funded also, although I take Jean’s point regarding hidden costs.
My rationale for doing the course stemmed from the difficulty I had in finding a PT when I was undertaking the OH degree and I felt strongly that if I could make it easier for the “next generation” of OH advisors I would do whatever was needed. I have never regretted this and I thoroughly enjoy this aspect of my role. I have had some excellent students (and some not so excellent!) and I would be reluctant to relinquish this part of my role in all honesty. Seeing the graduation photos (and in a couple of cases being invited to the graduation ceremony itself) makes everything worthwhile!

Good point re hidden costs. These are currently  offered distance learning and there with no charge made by the university to study it – but I would be surprised if that continues much longer. Most students undertaking D/L courses do so in their own time and that does impact on work-life balance. It is unsurprising that we struggle to find practice teachers prepared to support students who are undertaking  OH education.

I don’t think the NMC make a significant amount of money from recording such qualifications. In fact, I don’t recall them making a charge to record my teaching qualification.

I think I would disagree with you Anne  - there is a hidden cost for the course.
Days not at work, study / essay work in order to achieve PT status. I expect the NMC want money to record status.
Happy days.

Good Morning Anne

Can you recommend an acceptable course that would allow specialist OHA's to train as PT's? I need to work  and cannot commit to a fulltime course but would consider alternatives such as distance or day release if this was possible?

We have thought of that and we offer a course which used  identical modules but without the practice element. Consequently it does not confer SCPHN registration. It had been getting increasingly difficult to secure placements. Finding PTs for those in practice is not usually too difficult although meeting NMC standards requires creative approaches.  placements for those moving into OH is challenging.
You make a good point re HEIs not providing placements (ie expecting students to find their own placements) not offering OH courses. If that were the case many courses would be forced to close which would dilute the specialty.  We required students to find their own placements as a result of the number that refused the placements we had provided.

If oH nursing is to survive we need more PTs - volunteers would be very welcome.
Would you be able to assist us perhaps?

I’m sorry to hear the situation is no better for Practice Teachers. I did my course with Robert Gorden University and found finding a Practice teacher very stressful and challenging. If the University offer the course, I believe they should provide a register of Practice Teachers available. Otherwise why offer the course?

Good luck,

Subject : [OCC-HEALTH] Practice Teacher

I am wondering if anyone can help me.

I am about to start my Occupational Health degree with Robert Gordon University (Aberdeen) on the condition I find myself a practice teacher.

They need to be on the third part of the register and hold a practice teacher qualification.

I am based in Northern Ireland and I’m struggling to find one.  Could anyone help?

Kind Regards

Amber
