New
study released: Over 5000 articles in 96+ countries, 800 TV broadcasts, one
cultural event. But how did this happen?
Media
coverage compilation filled with data for analysis, or for brainstorming more
desired results-- small and large—for projects
artdesigncafe.com
has released a case study that shows an example of the current state of art in
the age of mass/Internet media via a compilation of the media coverage of Tony
Matelli’s discussion-generating Sleepwalker sculpture at Wellesley
College (2014), near Boston. 5000+ entries are listed showing how far and wide
an art story can travel when journalistically packaged in a certain way and
when pushed through various news distribution channels. The coverage extends from
“Wellesley to Waco, TX and Saskatchewan to Saudi Arabia”. Diverse
photo-based and Internet-based video distribution, through fairly new
networks— and social media— are key elements.
Part of a
summer focus, articles accompanying the case study / compilation include a
1000-word overview “Media Push and Pull… the ‘creepy
statue’ controversy”—co-partnered with Sculpture
magazine; interviews of the artist and media relations consultant to the
project (that were completely surprised by the international media frenzy); a
PR/journalism researcher estimates the financial value of the media coverage to
an organization; and former and current directors of Manchester’s
Castlefield Gallery discuss, “Can artists and art organizations leverage
a media frenzy to their benefit?”
