CFP for PGN Panel at MeCCSA 2015 Annual Conference
7-9 JANUARY 2015, NORTHUMBRIA UNIVERSITYTHEME: GENERATIONS

Dear Postgraduate Network,
The MeCCSA Annual Conference this year will take place on 7th – 9th January 2015 at Northumbria University. The theme for the conference is ‘Generations’ and we are keen to encourage a Postgraduate Network to participate in PGN panel.


‘Generations’, will provide participants with the opportunity to reflect upon historical and contemporary shifts in academic environments, theories, research approaches and trends, professional practice and the various ways in which the concept of generation/s informs diverse media and communication genres.


Confirmed plenary speakers: Professor Karen Boyle, Dr Ian Brown, Professor Bob Franklin, Dr Paulo Gerbaudo, Dr Donna Leishman, Professor Dafna Lemish, Professor Lynn Segal, Dr Ruth Sanz Sabido


We welcome contributions to the following panel:
PANEL: The new generation of early career academics
We’d like to invite contributions on the role of the early career academic today, and the difficulties associated with starting an academic career and making the transition from student to staff member in the current academic environment.

Topics may include:
- comparative or historical accounts of the idea of the early career academic
- empirical research into the length of the early career period or changing perceptions of employment prospects
- the precarity of academic labour 
- changing values: auditing, impact, neoliberalism and the entrepreneurial academic
- the use of social media and the rise of the self-tweeting academic
- the pressure to publish and publishing debates (online/offline, commercial/open access, academic/non-academic)
- pedagogical issues and teaching requirements
- networking issues
- funding issues
- the importance of regional, national and international conferences
- the 'building up' of an academic CV 
- training and the extent to which postgraduates are prepared for an academic career
