How the Press Covered the Leveson Report Fallout and the Royal Charter

After the release of the Report from the Leveson Inquiry’s many months of hearings, evidence and deliberations, an extended period of wrangling over how and to what extent to implement its recommendations ensued. A cross-party agreement was reached on a Royal Charter for a recognition body that would act as a checking mechanism for any self-regulator for the press. This Charter was highly controversial and the PressBof, the financing body for the Press Complaints Commission that Leveson had determined had failed to appropriately regulate the press, proposed its own version. Many newspaper editors and owners came out quite publicly against the Royal Charter and there were clear divisions within the industry. But to what extent did this impact newspaper’s reporting of the story? Gordon Ramsay of the Media Standards Trust has conducted an extensive content analysis of newspaper reporting on the issue from 29 November 2012 - 29 November 2013 examining over 2,000 articles from the UK national press. The LSE Media Policy Project and LSE's journalism and society think tank POLIS have invited him to present his findings. In a panel hosted by Professor Charlie Beckett, Head of LSE’s Department of Media and Communications and POLIS Director, Ramsay will answer questions from respondents Professor George Brock and Dr Sally Broughton Micova, and from the public.

Speakers:
Dr Gordon Ramsay is a Research Fellow at the Media Standards Trust. He has previously conducted a series of analyses of news content, including on UK press coverage of the Leveson Inquiry.

Professor George Brock is Head of the Journalism Department at City University London. Prior to this he spent decades in the industry working mostly at The Times where he served as Brussels bureau chief, European Editor, Managing Editor, Saturday Editor and most recently International Editor in a 28-year career at the newspaper.
