Brilliant. Thank-you. My sentiments entirely.

I was not going to respond to this “debate" but the attacks on Elina, basically the one voice dissenting from the general consensus (and silent members?) have become too vitriolic and self-righteously smug.

Elina was making the point that most if not all of us are safely sitting far away from any danger. Was she being emotional? Yes, of course. Mohammed-Ali’s words were also very emotional, understandably so.

There is no problem at all disagreeing with Elina. But the general thrust against her combines the demand for increased empathy for the Palestinian suffering with a complete absence of this kind of empathic engagement with her situation.

If it’s "not worth" engaging with your opponent, how can you call this a valuable debate? Elina is being singled out, biographically and rhetorically as “such people”. This is getting close to very very disagreeable collective behaviour.

I am not saying both sides are to blame to the same degree. But we are talking to people here, not governments.

But what we are repeatedly getting from Dr Bardach-Yelov, and which is threatening to run a very valuable debate into a cul-de-sac, are the product of what appears to be a totally closed mind and an expression of exactly the same bunker mentality as that of the Israeli politicians that we encounter every day in the British media. I would suggest there is no more point in trying to engage such people in a sensible, rational debate than there is in trying to persuade the flat earth brigade that the planet is in fact round.
