I briefly read up about medieval and post medieval coins a while ago and it doesn't ring a bell, but I think it probably refers to any silver coins below the 92.5% Sterling standard including pre c.1300 English, continental and Roman coins (the later are often well below 92.5% - my University did a fair bit of research into low purity precious metal Roman coins, it's astonishing what levels of debasement the Empire ended up with!)

Hi,

I was wondering if someone could define base-silver for me (used in the context of coinage) please. I’m guessing that it refers to silver coinage with a very low silver content, but would appreciate any confirmations/clarifications etc.
