Hello Maya: Knowing a bit about Canada, I can report that there are HER-like things there. The big one is the nationwide Register of National Historic Sites (run by Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada), but every Canadian province has an archaeological record. Here is British Columbia's: http://www.for.gov.bc.ca/archaeology/accessing_archaeological_data/ These are underpinned by an Act of that province's legislature, which also underpins the maintenance of standards of excavation, recording, fieldwork and reporting. These Acts tend to follow from the Federal Government's Standards and Guidelines (Canada is a confederation): Several of the larger cities also maintain a register, supporting planning application decisions. Here is Vancouver's: http://vancouver.ca/home-property-development/find-a-registered-heritage-building-site-or-tree.aspx So, not very different from UK in spirit or practice. I think a similar arrangement applies in the United States, with the bulk of the records held by State governments. Hello HER Forum, I’m relatively new to the Forum (and even to the world of HERs) and so far I have been quietly observing the banter and discussions from afar (literally - from way up north in the Scottish Highlands). However, I’ve been curious for a little while about a topic, and I was wondering if any of you may be able to shed some light on it… What do other countries do in regards to the HER/SMR system? I’m sure that there are completely different set ups for archaeology as a whole throughout different European countries and beyond. Does anyone know anything about how other countries deal with the data and what their approaches are? Does anyone know of any websites / resources I could consult?
