It stresses the relative lack of attention to social (vs.healthcare) determinants in the US, as well as the lack of attention to socioeconomic disparities. I found a lot to like here. I have some concern that although the authors (Elizabeth Docteur and Robert A. Berenson) note the important socioeconomic disparities associated with race and ethnicity in the US, some of their conclusions could be taken as posing attention to racial disparities and socioeconomic disparities as competing interests. On the contrary (as they do say, I believe), anything that reduced socioeconomic disparities in health would be enormously beneficial to African Americans and other minorities. I think it is hard to overestimate how much the political responses to both race and poverty in the US are shaped by the perceptions that poor people are mostly minority and African Americans and other minority people are mostly poor.
