The Geology under London and the Thames Valley
Friday 17th October 2014, 1200-16.00
The Geological Society<http://www.geolsoc.org.uk/>, Burlington House, Piccadilly, London, W1J 0BG
Convened by the British Geological Survey<http://www.bgs.ac.uk/>

The British Geological Survey invites you to explore the geology under London through a series of talks centred around the London 3D geological model. The model represents the natural successor to published BGS maps of the city, extending the mapped geology into the subsurface and revealing the 'hidden' geology beneath London and the Thames Valley. Following the release of the Central London model, this event marks the release of the unified wider London geological model and its publication in additional new formats. In addition to a description of the model, invited speakers from industry and academia will convey their experiences of the city's geology, with talks on engineering geology, geological hazards, groundwater resource planning and renewable energy. The event is aimed at professionals from all sectors who may benefit from an improved understanding of the geology of London.

12.00 Light buffet lunch and networking (including posters and demos)
12.45 The BGS National Geological Model. Steve Mathers, BGS
13.05 Construction and application of the London model. Helen Burke, Jon Ford and Holger Kessler, BGS
13.35 Chalk from sub crop to outcrop in the London Basin: a vital link for engineering. Rory Mortimore, University of Brighton
13.55 Major London infrastructure reliant on detecting geological hazards. Tim Chapman, Arup
14.15 Refreshments and networking
14.50 Evaluation of the performance of large open loop geothermal systems in the Chalk and River Terrace Gravels aquifers - insights from the Royal Festival Hall and the Tate Modern. David Birks, Parsons Brinkerhoff
15.10 Use of the 3D geological model with SCL (sprayed concrete lining) tunnelling at the Crossrail Farringdon Station. Paula Cabrero, Angelos Gakis, Dr Sauer and Partners
15.30 Application of 3D geological models to London Basin Groundwater Model. Nigel Hoad, Environment Agency
15.50 Wrap-up. Holger Kessler, BGS

Admission is free, but registration is required as space is limited. Please register for this event either online (https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/GeologyUnderLondon) or by contacting R. Dearden ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>) by Wednesday 8th October 2014.
We look forward to welcoming you,
Kind regards,
Steve Mathers (Team Leader, National Geological Model), Holger Kessler (Team Leader, Modelling Systems) and Jon Ford (Chief Geologist England)
