Teaching Citizenship and Identity
in Schools: Museums-led Perspectives
Durham University, 1st and 2nd
September 2014
Timed to coincide with the launch of the new National
Curriculum for schools in England, this workshop aims to explore museums-led
materials and methods for teaching Citizenship Studies in particular.
Day 1
Exhibiting: The day
will introduce and illustrate the workshop themes of citizenship and identity
through Durham University’s museum collections. Specifically, two forthcoming
exhibitions will be used to reflect on representations of national belonging,
migration and citizenship, and how these might be incorporated into citizenship
education
Day 2
Learning: The
rich variety of Durham’s collections offers an
‘object lesson’ – quite literally – in how to engage students through
innovative teaching methods. Museums are an ideal medium for promoting critical
thinking, analytical and discursive skills, all of which are central to the
Citizenship Studies curriculum. This day will look at the practicalities of
teaching Citizenship Studies from a variety of perspectives.
