CALL for PhD Grant

1 PhD Grant is currently offered at Universidade Nova de Lisboa – FCSH (Faculty of Social and Human Sciences, http://www.fcsh.unl.pt/?set_language=en), for a period of up to five years, starting in September 2014.

In the context of the European Research Council (ERC-Starting Grant) funded project, “BLACKBOX - A collaborative platform to document performance composition: from conceptual structures in the backstage to customizable visualizations in the front-end”, we are seeking to hire 1 excellent PhD student in the following research area:

- Multimodal Communication/Linguistics (cognitive and ethnographic perspectives)

For this research area, we seek a linguist with a Master’s in (Cognitive) Linguistics, Communication Sciences and Arts or Neurosciences. This PhD student shall assist the Post-Doc researcher to be hired for the same scientific area.

The selected candidate shall be willing to undergo scientific research in the framework of the BlackBox project and therefore write his/her PhD thesis in accordance with the main topics of the project.

The selected candidate should have an interest in the performing arts and in the analysis of the human body performance in artistic or creative settings.

He/she will work together with an interdisciplinary team and will be responsible for the micro-analysis of a multimodal corpus composed of interviews of contemporary performing artists and video footage of their own artistic works.

Required skills:

- Experience with the analysis of multimodal corpora in general;
- Good gesture annotation skills;
- Experience with video annotation tools (ELAN, ANVIL or similar);
- Experience with audiovisual recordings, editing and processing;
- Experience with working in collaborative settings;
- Experience with applied research;
- Professional, enthusiastic, hard-working and “can do” attitude;
- Capable of independently managing time and the tasks associated with a fast-paced research agenda and strong publication objectives;
- Familiarity with motion tracking devices and biological motion would be a plus;
- Demonstrable evidence of good written and oral communication skills in English;

The monthly payment for this position will correspond to the national PhD grants system in an average of 1.000€ net/month.
