Lecturer/Postdoc in Gesture Studies, Cognitive Linguistics and Media Informatics

This position combines teaching graduate courses which bridge Cognitive Linguistics and Media Informatics at the Bonn-Aachen International Center for Information Technology (http://mi.b-it-center.de/) and conducting original research within the Natural Media research group at Human Technology Centre (HumTec), RWTH Aachen University (http://www.rwth-aachen.de/cms/~a/root/?lidx=1).

The postdoc begins September/October 2014 and has a duration of 1 year with possibility of renewal. Special preference will be given to applicants with training and experience in Cognitive Linguistics/Gesture Studies and native or near-native proficiency in English. Ph.D in Cognitive Linguistics, Cognitive Science, or related field must have been successfully obtained by September 2014 and not before 2008. 

The holder of this position will teach two courses per year (one 20-hour course per semester, lectured in English) within the B-IT Master's course in Media Informatics (CS), on concepts such as (and not limited to) embodiment, multimodality, symbolic representations, creativity and meaning, and media informatics.

Course syllabi can be personalized by the lecturer with approval of the Chair (Prof. Jarke, Computer Science Dept., RWTH Aachen University). 

The holder of this position will also conduct original research on gesture-related topics following the general research in the Natural Media Lab, preferably within an interdisciplinary context and using Motion-Capture technology (previous experience is preferable, but not required; http://www.humtec.rwth-aachen.de/index.php?article_id=945&clang=1). 

Salary is based on 50% of the German TV-L 13 pay scale (approx. €1300/month after taxes, modulated depending on previous experience, and will increase as the researcher remains hired); it includes full health insurance, social security, etc. Conference travel and other research-related expenses will also be provided. Aachen (Aix-la-Chapelle) is located between Cologne and Brussels; Amsterdam and Paris are only a 2.5 hour train-ride away.
