Dear Andy,

A while ago I went through each course, and changed the course landing pages to modules, as it was less text like and presented the students with more key college information within the main area they use, their course.

The cross college modules I use(created via HTML option) are, accessibility and careers information. Then all see that courses announcement, used to have calendars and sometimes tasks. There are some specific modules for different levels and curriculums.

Modules are great for updating something once, and this is then updated in its many locations.

In 2 years I have only had one tutor who wanted the landing page reverted back to announcements. I obliged, but only after discussion. I believe if not managed well, the announcement tool, can become cluttered

I don't tend to use those notification type modules you mentioned, as yes they can be slow. But I also can't imagine a lot of students wanting to see them.

Another module that is useful is for the channels / RSS feeds. But you have to be careful, as Blackboard is fussy about the RSS feed type. But great for getting news to the course page with minimum effort

Hope this helps
Regards
Ty

Subject: Using modular home page as course landing page in templates

Dear all

Following feedback from staff and students, we are considering amending our standard template for course creation so that the entry page is a module page (rather than 'announcements' as at present).

However, colleagues in ICT have expressed concern that this will have a negative impact on overall performance because of the time taken to build the modules with dynamic content (e.g. What's New)

I'd be interested to know the experiences of other institutions:

- Do you use a module page as the standard course entry point?

- If so, does this have any impact on page loading times?

Many thanks
Andy
