Hello Ty,
That’s a good question; I think it’s one of those which can be answered by saying “it depends…”
J
We’ve just had a conversation in our office about your question, and my perspective is that where there’s a small amount of resources, a clearly-labelled single
page is preferable, whereas once you reach a certain number of resources on a page (say 12-15) then it’s worth splitting them into well-structured and labelled folders.
I agree that folders-within-folders are not preferable, and for us the biggest no-no is avoiding empty folders at all costs. A colleague did some analysis of our
courses in the past counting any empty folders to give a ‘satisfaction ratio’; it only takes a few clicks into empty folders before a student gets bored and stops looking.
One other topic which came up in our discussion was that our system has to be very flexible due to our breadth of provision. Our college delivers degrees, foundation
degrees, A-levels, GCSEs, BTECs, NVQs and other qualifications, so we would never be able to have a ‘one size fits all’ structure, whereas if your institution specialises more it may be suitable to have rules along the lines of ‘one Blackboard course per degree
programme’ or ‘one menu item per BTEC unit’. Personally I prefer guidance and templates, but not locking the system down so that all eventualities are technically possible.
Be very interested in the thoughts of others on this…
Best
Chris

Subject: The mouse-click vs the mouse-scroll
Dear all,
A less of a technical question for a Friday. While reviewing a student micro survey about our Blackboard I’m questioning the following -
When encouraging good practice with course building, do you preach to tutors to add more folders for structuring resources (i.e. more clicks) or a clear but longer page layout (scrolling)?
My preference is clicking through a clear folder layout, and not reading through a wall of text to find what I am after. But I realise to some degree this isn’t good web design practice, and we should reduce the clicks. And I also realise
it does depend on the amount of resources uploaded / likely to be uploaded over time
Any thoughts and opinions very welcome
Thank you
Ty
