Applications are invited for the post of Statistician to be based in the Research and Development Unit at Papworth Hospital, Cambridge. Papworth Hospital has a long-standing collaboration with the MRC Biostatistics Unit in Cambridge where the successful applicant will enjoy visiting worker rights and benefit from the day-to-day support (onsite and offsite) from a designated MRC Senior Statistician; a position currently being recruited to at the MRC Biostatistics Unit as part of this collaboration. The post represents an excellent development opportunity as the successful applicant will work closely with both trial methodologists at the Biostatistics Unit and research practitioners at Papworth Hospital in advancing health research.

The successful applicant will contribute to on-going clinical studies at Papworth (most notably the ETTAA Study) and play a key role in the design of new studies, protocol writing, statistical analysis plan development and the analysis and reporting of studies leading to publications.

Applicants should have a postgraduate degree in statistics or a related subject and statistical computing experience, e.g. programming in R, Stata or SPSS. Some knowledge / experience of clinical trials would be advantageous, however training can be provided. Applicants should possess excellent communication skills and be able to contribute substantially to writing scientific papers.

Papworth Hospital is the largest specialist cardiothoracic (heart and lung) hospital in the UK and includes the country's main heart and lung transplant centre. We have a long and established reputation for innovation and leading-edge research. The R&D Unit currently manages several Papworth Hospital sponsored multi-centred surgical trials and will be seeking registration as a Clinical Trials Unit in 2015.  Papworth Hospital will be moving into a new purpose built hospital on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus in 2017. A move that will further strengthen our research links with commercial, academic and NHS partners already located on the Biomedical Campus.

The MRC Biostatistics Unit aims to advance medical science by the development, application and dissemination of statistical methods. It is one of Europe's leading biostatistics research institutions and includes many internationally renowned statisticians.
