My notes on the event at Lincoln Uni.

Digital Practice and Pedagogy (Xerte) workshop: 26 June, Lincoln University

A very useful overview of how xerte is being used by students to create resources. The students have taken to xerte with some enthusiasm and the results are well worth looking at.

Lincoln University History Dept

Jamie Wood     Antonella Scorpo

Xerte in History. At L1, L2 and MA
http://makingdigitalhistory.co.uk/

Using xerte in place of essays.  Also student ambassadors to help other students.  The style guide was turned into an OER.
Opportunities to develop team skills and internet research.

Brighton University Media Dept
Sarah Atkinson and Adam Bailey
DigLit and creating online content. MA course
http://bit.ly/mjm22-blog

Lit skills inc Dig identity, Creative Commons, accessibility, assessment

Issues
Pop up blocker needs disabling
Uploading and embedding
Publishing
Interactivity design

Time-consuming and non-intuitive. It is, however, structured and accessible.
Requires the acquisition of DigLit skills
Not universally appropriate.

Xerte is a disappointing look for digitally savvy people. Frustrating, time-limited and legacy objects.
Alexandra McGougan and Max Jacobson – Gonzalez came in by Bb Collaborate and there was a fruitful conversation.

These 2 resources are worth investigating, both for their content and their use of xerte. Max was frustrated by the interface and was not impressed with the monochrome look. The look of Xerte has, however, developed since these resources were created.

Newman University Psychology Dept
Bob Ridge-Stearn.

Xerte in Heath psychology. Bob is elearning at Newman University.
L6
Stress health n illness. Living with a disability or chronic illness
Worked in groups. 1 obj with 4 commentaries.
Xerte is hosted externally. 2 yrs. funding. What about sustainability?
Newman use Moodle
More criticism but these objects are good on the iPad.
Wordle on front page.
Students thought they needed to use all templates.

PowerPoint templates for page design
Feedback: Students were engaged, applied learning and developed skills. Independence. Very rewarding. No complaints. Collaborative.

Xpert used for images.  http://xpert.nottingham.ac.uk/

Embedded TED lecture, embedded screencast.
Student wanted to add this to their CV.
One student designed a LO for a sexual health charity. QR code around her neck -scan and use in the club.

PowerPoint comparison: ppt is still capable of producing great LOs  eg jpgs, and apparently Microsoft have a plugin coming out shortly.
External examiner could not always run the LO.

Future:
A L4 module would have only 5 page template

Encourage to take their own images and video.

Template would have been useful.  Xerte Recipes  http://goo.gl/1gS3XU

Export but also give access.
