The giraffe: new perspectives on a 'well-known' species 8 July 2014 Huxley Lecture Theatre, ZSL London Zoo 6pm - 7.45pm FREE Compared with other megaherbivores, the giraffe has not been subject to significant study in the past and, as a consequence, it is less well-known than we might think. Recently, however, significant new and innovative research has been published in major journals. This meeting will bring together an international group of scientists, who will demonstrate the breadth of the new research by describing recent advances in giraffe biology, from the taxon level (classification and conservation), through population-scale social organisation (long-term studies and social networks) to individual behaviours (observations of REM sleep). Talks and speakers: REM-sleep as indicator for stress in Giraffe Florian Sicks, Curator of Mammals, Tierpark Berlin Life history of Thornicroft's giraffe Fred B. Bercovitch, Primate Research Institute & Wildlife Research Center, Kyoto University Reticulated giraffe: you don't know what you've got till it's gone John B Doherty, Project Coordinator, Reticulated Giraffe Project This meeting will be chaired by Russell Seymour, IUCN SSC Giraffe and Okapi Specialist Group Three-course dinner with the speakers A dinner will follow this Science and Conservation Event and everyone is welcome. Dinner is £35 per person (includes two glasses of wine). A booking form can be found here<http://admin.zsl.org/sites/default/files/media/2014-06/Giraffes%20-%20a%20new%20perspective%208%20July.pdf>.
