Dear all,
I have recently come to an agreement with Springer
concerning the publication of a series of three books on the theories
of the Brazilian Geographer Milton Santos. This initiative is part of my
project of translating and introducing Santos to the English speaking
community. One of the three books will be a compilation of texts by
authors who have applied Santos's concepts to their research. The goal
of this book is to show how powerful the theory and concepts created by
Santos are and how they have been applied to different geographical
topics. Among the topics already covered are: urban violence, law,
political economy, music industry, geotechnologies, rural studies, urban
planning, the Amazon, and public health.
There is still room to include one or two more authors. I would like to
invite potential contributors to submit a 300-word abstract (with
tentative title) and a mini-cv (150 words maximum). Deadline: 20 June.
Selected authors will be contacted as of 25 June.
Chapters will be 3500 words max. Texts must answer the question:
“How can Santos's theory and concepts help us understand …”? The format
leans towards an essay rather than a typical scientific article. For
reference, please consult the article “Security and Surveillance in
Times of Globalization: an Appraisal of Milton Santos’ Theory”, recently
published in the International Journal of E-Planning Research.
Topics to be considered for publication: transportation, religion,
hunger, a critical perspective to environmental studies, mega-events,
mass protests, migration, globalization, etc. I will also consider
suggestions.
If you have any question about the call, do not hesitate to send an e-mail to lucas.melgaco at
vub.ac.be.
Yours,
Lucas Melgaço
