medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Dear George,
What kind of books? Grimoires, or just ordinary books? Have they been analyzed or is this a literary motif?
Meg

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Dear medieval-religion colleagues,

From time to time, over the years, I’ve come across information regarding books that have been bound in human skin. Every description I’ve seen refers to books bound from the seventeenth century onward, but I have seen a single reference (https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v1/url?u=http://www.thecrimson.com/article/2006/2/2/the-skinny-on-harvards-rare-book/&k=xJ26TAwb97wzIimyhzPQ1w%3D%3D%0A&r=cVvp7oUZy3HyLQu2r1juGcDwpdRsnia%2FCmWt01oVazI%3D%0A&m=WgKZqzvngbs%2BlJBSLNdAESna61Eea2I9ikhTL0aeEus%3D%0A&s=9633504f33c57336b283666ce592b4280f8d3dffd456240c19ca55ac8d4a9964) to an earlier example (apparently, a thirteenth-century French bible). This reference gives no detail about the whereabouts of the book, or of the history of such practices.

Do any of you have any knowledge of pre-Reformation books that were bound with human skin (or even had a leaf or more with such a substance)? I have wondered if this were ever done with the skin of a saint, thus creating a sort of bookish relic.

Thanks — all good wishes, George
