The Centre for the
Study of Islamic
Manuscripts at Al-Furqan
Islamic Heritage
Foundation, in
co-operation with
Fundación General de la
Universidad Complutense
de Madrid are organising
a training course on
Codicology, entitled
“Arabic Codicology: The
Islamic Manuscript
Heritage in the El
Escorial Collection”.
The course will take
place from 14 until 18
July 2014, in San
Lorenzo de El Escorial
(Madrid - Spain), in the
framework of the
Complutense University
Summer Courses.
The course aims at
providing the students
with the basic
codicology knowledge and
the research procedures
they will need when
studying and analysing
Arabic manuscripts, as
well as at providing
them with a familiarity
with the libraries of
the Arabic Islamic world
in Medieval and Modern
times, more especially
that which belonged to
the Moroccan sultan
Muley Zaydân.

that the training is
comprehensive and
effective, the course
programme has been
designed in such a way
that the students can
apply step by step the
knowledge they acquire
and develop their
analytical abilities
with the manuscripts

The Royal Library of the
El Escorial monastery
houses the most
important collection of
Arabic manuscripts in
Spain, one of the most
interesting ones in
Europe. The location
where the Complutense
University summer
courses take place is,
thanks to its closeness
to the Library,
particularly valuable as
far as the aims of this
course are concerned,
since practical training
will be organized there,
thanks to the
collaboration which has
been set up with the El
Escorial Library.
The course, directed by
Nuria
Martínez-de-Castilla,
will be taught by
specialists of Arabic
manuscripts, among them
two of the foremost
experts in this field,
François Déroche and
Adam Gacek, who will for
the first time give
together a course of
this kind.
The course provides a
global overview of the
field, thus proving a
ground-breaking
programme in the frame
of Arabic codicology
studies, mainly due to
its practical approach
and to the quality and
diversity of the
examples which will be
examined during the
course. It intends to
answer the growing
interest among scholars
and professionals, like:
librarians, archivists,
restorers, art
historians, as well as
researchers, university
students and
bibliophiles, with the
international stance
required by Arabic
codicology studies.
The hands-on sessions
imply that the number of
students cannot exceed
16 persons. For this
reason, a motivation
letter explaining the
interest in the course
is required; it will be
taken into account
during the selection
process.
The course will be given
in English in its
entirety. Students have
thus to be proficient in
this language in order
to successfully attend
the course.

الملكية بالإسكوريال
أهم مجموعة
من المخطوطات
العربية في
إسبانيا، وهي
واحدة من
الأكثر جذباً
للإهتمام على
مستوى أوروبا.
والمكان الذي
تقيم فيه
جامعة كومبلوتينسي
برنامج دوراتها
الصيفية يقع
على مقربة
من المكتبة
بحيث يمثل
قيمة مضافة
الى الدورة
من حيث
تحقيق أهدافها؛
إذ سيتم
نتظيم التدريب
العملي هناك،
نسبة للتعاون
القائم مع
مكتبة الإسكوريال.
تقوم
الأستاذة نوريا
مارتينيز- دي-
كاستييا على
متابعة هذه
الدورة، وسيحاضر
فيها متخصصون
في المخطوطات
العربية، بينهم
إثنان من
أبرز الخبراء
في هذا
المجال، وهما
فرانسوا ديروش،
وآدم قاشيك؛
حيث ستكون
هذه المرة
الأولى التي
يقومان فيها
بالتدريس معاً
في مثل
هذه الدورات.
تقدم
الدورة نظرة
شاملة لهذا
المجال، بحيث
تمثل برنامجاً
رائداً فى
إطار دراسات
علم المخطوطات
العربية، ويرجع
ذلك أساساً
إلى النهج
العملي الذي
تتبناه، وجودة
وتنوع الأمثلة
التي سيتم
طرحها ومن
ثم بحثها
خلال الدورة.
تأتي
هذه الدورة
إستجابة للإهتمام
المتزايد من
قبل العلماء،
والمحترفين،
ومن ضمن
هؤلاء أمناء
المكتبات، والعاملين
بالأرشفة، ومحترفي
الترميم، ومؤرخي
الفن، بالإضافة
الى الباحثين
وطلاب الجامعات
ومحبي الكتب.
ونظراً
لقيام الدارسين
بالأنشطة العملية
المباشرة خلال
جلسات الدورة،
فإن هذا
يعني أن
العدد لا
يمكن أن
يتجاوز الستة
عشر. ولهذا،
فلابد من
كتابة رسالة،
يعرب فيها
الدارس عن
دوافعه ويشرح
رغبته في
الإلتحاق بها،
حيث تؤخذ
في
الإعتبار في
عملية الاختيار.
ستكون
الدورة في
مجملها باللغة
الإنجليزية،
وعليه فيجب
على الدارسين
أن يتقنوها،
من أجل
إجتياز الدورة
