Swets Publisher survey on Open Access and APC Management

Open Access (OA) initiatives have been on the scene for many years now.
Originally, OA intended to offer access "free of charge and free
copyright and licensing restrictions to scholarly publications" but in
recent times we have seen how OA has gone beyond that original idea and
is now transforming economics of conventional publishers.

A number of Society publishers that decided to move their subscription
based journals to OA were crucial to the embracing of OA by authors,
funding institutions and commercial publishers. The introduction of the
use of Article Processing Charges (APCs) as the central means of
financing professional publishing of OA journals and the involvement of
well-established publishers, with quality peer-review systems and
high-impact journals have removed the initial doubts about the
sustainability of OA journals.

In the last decade the importance of the APC business model has grown
rapidly and to date almost all major commercial publishers have started
full open access or hybrid journals funded by APCs.

The OA initiatives have gained support and this new form of publishing
is now funding and leading the renovation of the business models that
have been used in scholarly publishing for decades. As a result of that,
Swets has decided to further explore how we can play a role in OA.

We are conducting a survey amongst publishers to identify the current
status of the Open Access situation at their organisation, particularly
in the context of APCs. Your responses to the survey will be used to
help develop solutions to assist publishers. Have your say!
