Call for Papers Annual Conference of the German Studies Association of Ireland (GSAI, formerly ATLTGI) Trinity College Dublin 14-15 November 2014 We are delighted to announce that the annual conference of the German Studies Association of Ireland will take place on 14-15 November at Trinity College Dublin. As in previous years, the conference will include three panels showcasing recent work in German Studies. A round table discussion co-hosted by the GDI (German Teachers' Association of Ireland) is also planned. Members are warmly invited to submit proposals for 20-minute presentations under one of the following headings: Panel 1: Language Pedagogy and Linguistics Panel 2: Literary, Historical and Cultural Studies Panel 3: Special themed panel on 'Truth and Lies' (see below) * Submissions from postgraduate students and early career researchers are particularly welcome and shall be given priority. * Each paper will be allotted 20 minutes for presentation followed by a 5-8 minute questions and answers session. * As this conference is for GSAI members, anyone who wishes to attend the conference and/or present a paper must first register as a member. Special Panel Topic: Truth and Lies Oscar Wilde famously refers to the proper aim of art as being "the telling of beautiful untrue things". This is one kind of duplicity: art as lying. Twenty years earlier, Nietzsche had gone considerably further with his accusations: for him, not just the language of art, but all language 'lies', its armies of metaphors serving to conceal rather than reveal any truths. This accusation reverberates across the whole of the twentieth century, constituting for some schools of thought a kind of incontrovertible truth in and of itself. But thinking about language and representation is only one mode of thinking truth and untruth. Two years previous to Nietzsche the new truth of the story of man's origins is told by Darwin, for whom the truth is constituted, not by armies of evolving metaphors, but by armies of evolving genes. The availability of an observable scientific truth that brings the world closer to us, while at the same time the world recedes out of the reach of language and representation are two of many strands of thinking that revolve around the establishment of truth. In other discourses - of law, religion, history, forensics, psychoanalysis... - the decision regarding truth and untruth may be of different import, but it does not escape these two questions: can language be truthful? Can the truth be known? Papers of 20 minute duration in German or English are invited on any aspect of the topic "Truth and Lies" as it emerges in German language literature, culture, linguistics or thought in any century. Die Kunst als Lüge - als eine Art der Täuschung. Zwanzig Jahre vor Wilde war Nietzsche entschieden weiter gegangen mit seinen Anschuldigungen: für ihn ist nicht nur künstlerische Sprache sondern jede Art Sprache Lüge; ihre Bildhaftigkeit verstecke die Wahrheit, anstatt sie zu enthüllen. Diese Sprachskepsis hallt durch das gesamte 20. Jahrhundert nach, sie stellt für manche Denkschulen selbst eine Art unerschütterliche Wahrheit dar. Aber Sprache und Darstellung in den Blick zu nehmen, ist nur eine Art des Nachdenkens über Wahrheit und Lüge. Zwei Jahre vor Nietzsche hatte Darwin eine neue Wahrheit über den Ursprung der Menschheit zur Debatte gestellt. Für ihn konstituierten nicht Metaphern, sondern veränderliche Erbfaktoren die Wahrheit. Die Anerkennung einer wissenschaftlich lesbaren Wahrheit, die uns die Welt verständlicher macht, und eine Welt, die sich der Sprache und der Darstellung entzieht - zwei widersprüchliche Zugänge zur Feststellung von "Wahrheit". In anderen Diskursen - im Bereich von Recht und Gesetz, Religion, Geschichte, Psychoanalye u.s.w. - kommt der Frage um Wahrheit und Unwahrheit ein unterschiedlicher Stellenwert zu, aber auch diese Disziplinen müssen sich zwei grundsätzliche Fragen stellen: Kann Sprache überhaupt wahrhaftig sein? Und ist die Wahrheit erkennbar? Die German Studies Association in Irland lädt dazu ein, auf ihrer Jahrestagung am 14. - 15. November im Trinity College Dublin in 20minütigen Vorträgen auf Deutsch oder Englisch ausgewählte Aspekte des Problemkomplexes "Wahrheit und Lüge" in der deutschen Literatur, Kultur, Sprache und Geistesgeschichte zu diskutieren.
