Dear Paul

We do not allow any mobile phones in the exam room.  We check at the door and make a pre-exam announcement to hand them in.  The student receives a laminated number card and the device is placed in a heavy  duty plastic wallet with the same number. Phones can then be collected from our college reception at the end of the exam session (a long, long way from the exam halls).  We collect very few phones because it is of great inconvenience to the student!

If we find a phone in the procession of student they are immediately reported.  The last offender, who retained their phone until we spotted it during a clash sitting, was disqualified from the subject and lost his University place.  I use this example to discourage students – it is effective.

Subject: Mobile phones in exam rooms.... or not.

Dear fellow Exams Officers,

After a number of incidents of phones being found in exam rooms, I have been asked if I can make a quick survey of how other centres handle candidates’ mobile phones.

One of our VPs has stated that her previous centre allowed candidates to have phones in their bags (switched off) in boxes or cages at the front of the room.  Our solution is to warn candidates that phones are not allowed in the room under ANY circumstances, and we issue a ticket and put the phones into sandwich bags at the door and store the phones in our cupboard until the end of the exam.   With over 300 candidates filling the Sports Hall this is time consuming and uses invigilator resources, but we can guarantee that I have told candidates before EACH exam what our expectations are.  They can also put phones in lockers before they arrive.

Please enlighten us on what your practices are in the rest of the world!

Thanks
