Dear all,

Thank you to everyone who replied with advice on how to clean scanner glass of adhesive. As others may also encounter this problem, here is a summary of the suggestions.

*Surgical Spirit: This can be brought from Boots. Apply it using a lint free cloth and keep the area ventilated. It is flammable.

*Sticky Stuff Remover (actual name) then clean the glass afterwards as normal. Can be obtained from Wilkinsons.

*You can use pure acetone to remove any substance from glass (lightly moisten a section of cotton wall or a cotton bud stick to rub over the area). As long as you are not soaking the glass in it, any residual acetone will quickly evaporate off without leaving a residue behind. Don't use nail varnish remover, it has to be pure acetone. If you are worried about leaving an residue the glass can always be cotton swabbed with water afterwards, preferably deionised water (or boiled and then left to dry if you do not have any access to bought or produced deionised water).

*PEL cloth (http://www.preservationequipment.com/Store/Products/Disaster-$4-Cleaning/Materials/PEL$9Cloth) will remove anything. Sometimes causes smudges but normally removes the harder residue and then the smudges are removed by screen wipes and a drying cloth.

*Use a crepe eraser. Rub it over the sticky patch. It will pick up the adhesive. You'll need to pick the remains off the crepe eraser and repeat a few times, depending on how much adhesive you have on the glass.

Thanks again to everyone who replied.
