Please find below details of a PhD research opportunity (Studentship) at the University of Greenwich, London.

Subject Area: Mathematics and Statistics
Project Title: Hidden Markov and doubly stochastic point process models with environmental applications.
Postgraduate Research Scholarship Ref: VCS-ACH-06-14

Project Description:
The research outlined in this PhD project falls in the area of Stochastic Modelling with applications in Environmental studies. The project, funded by a VC's scholarship, plans to develop stochastic point process models based on Hidden Markov and doubly stochastic Poisson processes to model environmental phenomena with a focus on hydrological time series. In the recent past, a new line of work in the proposed area of Stochastic Modelling has produced excellent initial results. This project aims to take this work further to extend the likelihood based statistical methods for the above stochastic models and develop applications of this class of models in the analysis of gauge rainfall, regional rainfall time series, river flows, and other environmental and hydrological data. This area of research has recently received much attention with the concept of global warming and climate change and has become an area of considerable interest to researchers and organisations. Recent floods in England and Wales caused by prolonged heavy rainfall episodes and the increased flood risk provide evidence for the importance of further research in the area of rainfall modelling. The complex nature of the environment and the impact of global changes on environmental factors seem to suggest that it is a challenging and fruitful area to work on. The project will consider stochastic models for both fine-scale and large-scale rainfall patterns. Another aspect of the project is to explore the capability of the proposed models in reproducing extreme values. In addition, the project will study the existing regional rainfall models and develop new models based on Hidden Markov processes to gain greater understanding of the features present in hydrological data. Introducing additional dependence in hidden Markov models, exploring their applications and developing the associated statistical inference methodology will form an important part of this project.

A potential candidate is expected to have a strong Probability & Statistics background with good ability in performing analytical and methodological research.
