PhD Studentship - Prediction Modelling of Spontaneous Preterm Birth
Applications are invited for a PhD studentship
to develop and evaluate a statistical prediction model to estimate the risk of spontaneous preterm birth using machine learning methods.
Preterm birth is the second biggest cause of death under one year of age and the long-term health and education impact is substantial for survivors. Women are often allocated to high-risk preterm birth clinics at initial
antenatal assessment for a variety of interventions but allocation methods vary and are largely based on isolated risk factors such as previous preterm birth. A new strategy is therefore required to improve the prediction of preterm birth. Based in the Department
of Health Sciences at the University of Leicester the successful applicant will identify, use, and critically appraise statistical methodologies to develop a statistical model to predict spontaneous preterm birth.
Applicants should hold a first class or upper second class undergraduate degree (or an equivalent overseas qualification) with a high statistical content. A Masters degree in statistics or medical statistics would be an
advantage. Applicants should have a good knowledge of statistical methodologies and an interest in medical statistics and health services research. Applicants must also meet the University’s standard English language requirements.
The University of Leicester is one of the UK's leading universities, committed to international excellence through the creation of world changing research and high quality, inspirational teaching. Leicester is ranked in the top 2% of universities
in the world by the QS World University Rankings and THE World University Rankings. In 2013 Leicester was the highest climbing UK university in the THE World Rankings, moving up 35 places to 161st in the table.
