Ah well - what about Badalia Herodsfoot? I bet there's nowhere

with a name like that in the London A-Z...

Best wishes

To add to those suggestion, I was looking for a South London connection in Kipling's fictional characters, and remembered 'Burges, tobacconist and cigar importer' who appears in several stories in 'Debits and Credits' and 'Limits and Renewals'. He is the prime mover in using his Masonic Lodge as a kind of drop in centre and therapeutic community for Great War soldiers in London. We are told his address is in one of the South Eastern postal districts.

Dear All,

I have passed on to the following suggestions to Leathermarketjmb.

Dummerston or Brattleboro (in Vermont) because these names correspond to the village name Burwash, rather than the name of the state Vermont. [thanks to Brian Kappler].

Pyecroft as a character name to add to Mulvaney [suggested by John Radcliffe]. I will add a link to Alastair Wilson's splendidly thorough notes on how the evidently Cockney Pyecroft arrived in Devonport!

I understand that tenants will be invited to vote on our contributions.

Many thanks,

John

Rather than "Vermont", perhaps Dummerston or Brattleboro. These are municipal names, whereas the state name "Vermont" corresponds (roughly) to "Sussex" rather than to "Burwash".

Dear All,

As always with forwarded correspondence, read from the last item up!

As life is full of the move of the Library at present, I would be grateful if suggestions could go directly to Mr Dalrymple:

Dear Len (if I may),

Of the many emails I receive daily, this has been the most 'fun' for an age.

I have submitted some basic ideas immediately, because I am aware that you will have time constraints. Then, I hope that you will be happy for me to pass on your request to friends and colleagues in the Society, who will find the question diverting, to say the least.

Now, to my own suggestions:

It may be that there are reasons to avoid ethnically weighted names, but if you have Simla then Lahore and Allahabad would have equal weight with regard to his time in India. He worked in Lahore as a journalist, and then moved on to Allahabad. See 1881 and 1887 in this link:

To parallel the Burwash name, you might choose Vermont, where the newly married Kipling lived for four years, and where his two daughters were born. Although his time there ended in unhappiness, those early days in Bliss Cottage and his new house Naulakha would give the name a very positive cachet. Incidentally, the house Naulakha still exists, and since the name refers to nine hundred thousand rupees, or a great jewel , it might, in itself, be suitable...

Equally, seeking a British location, the village of Rottingdean was dear to him, and maintains its links to his brief stay there. Perhaps the possibility of unpleasant changes to the name, when in use, make it difficult as a choice.

A name with a patrician background to parallel Dunsterville would be the other friend from the Stalky stories, This was G.C. Beresford of the Irish landed family. I know that there is already a Beresford House between Clapham and Brixton, which might complicate the choice - but most Kipling cognoscenti would look for the name alongside Dunsterville.

The last natural grouping, that of Kipling characters, is the one which our members will find most interesting, I would guess. Heldar is a strange choice in some ways, and it is much easier to point to the other two 'Soldiers Three' who were involved with Mulvaney in the early stories. These were Learoyd and Ortheris. Of the two, the obvious choice for me would be the Cockney Ortheris. Indeed, if there were a single name to choose, this would be my offering.

Now, I would suspect that you may be inundated with suggestions, and I apologise for this, but I would hate to think that an obvious and useful name had been missed.

With all good wishes,

John

Dear Mr Walker,
I work for a tenant managed housing organisation called Leathermarket JMB. We manage the Kipling Estate, which is not far from London Bridge. We will be accepting handover of a block of 27 new build properties next year, which will be incorporated into the estate.
We are looking for a name for the new block and wondered if you or your colleagues could suggest any names which would complement the names of blocks on the estate. We have two tower blocks called Simla and Burwash and low rise blocks called: Heldar, Dunsterville and Mulvaney.
We would welcome any suggestions you may have and perhaps just a couple sentences just explaining how they would fit with the names given to other blocks on the estate.

Kind Regards
