******************************** Please remove this footer before replying.Dear List,I wonder whether anyone could help me. I have an employee who works doing delicate work with his hands- model making, etc. He has been experiencing thumb pain for a few months now, ?cause. Whilst waiting for a referral to a hand specialist, we adjusted his duties and also sent him for physiotherapy. He has now seen the hand specialist, a diagnosis of an old fracture that had not healed properly was given, and he was given a steroid injection last week. He feels this was not done properly as he 'feels worse'.He returned to work today with a fit note from his GP advising altered duties and shorter hours - for 6 months! When I asked why he requires shorter hours, he said the pain gets worse throughout the day. However most of the tasks he describes as aggravating the condition are not work related - ie getting dressed. I'm not convinced shorter hours are the answer really. He says the only other option is surgery - and that won't be done for six months.I would add this is his third long term sickness absence in as many years - all for different conditions, and all involving very lengthy convoluted recovery times and long periods of reduced hours.I have arranged to meet with him again next week, and I've also asked the physiotherapist whether he feels he can offer any further input.I've written to his GP in the past, with disappointing results. Can anyone offer any guidance?Gratefully received,LucyOCC-HEALTH ARCHIVES: http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/occ-health.html
