Thank you to everybody’s response on this subject.

I had already been in touch with the RINB who have been helpful regarding a specialised workplace assessment via AtoW who I must say are responding a lot quicker to this than they have to other cases I have contacted them about.

Other information I have found is;

The following link is useful to explain the grieving process my case is going through http://www.rnib.org.uk/recently-diagnosed/coming-terms-sight-loss

The RINB have also got useful info on AtoW http://www.rnib.org.uk/information-everyday-living-work-and-employment-practical-support/access-work-scheme which her employer found useful.

My case will be moving into a new office in the future so I found the following information http://www.cae.org.uk/publications_list.html to help her employer with information they might want to consider – there are useful references for all disabilities and accessibility to buildings in that link.

I like the idea about being blindfolded around her office, I also remember doing this years ago in training. Also will follow up the special glasses from my local eye unit.

Thanks again

Karen

Hi Karen

Some eye units have various "glasses" which replicate specific eye conditions. Depends on your contacts locally for this. You should approach the education lead for the ophthalmology area.

Thanks for sharing your story. We do need to link in more with approved organisations so that we take the best advice. I have met a few visually impaired colleagues that just get on despite the prejudice and lack of awareness. We can be real ambassadors for disability organisations.

I have a sister who is blind, taking her into town to shop is really a humbling experience, we take so much for granted . The blind support group is very good in her area, but RNIB will com to work place and do work based visit . There is a cost involved though whereas if there is an active loc al group they will help where they can for free or donation process they were very good at putting little things in place we did not think of
Braille  lift and door labels Braille indicators for microwave
Devices to let u know when kettle is full of water etc, different floor textures to identify different zones

Hi Karen

Have you tried RNIB? I haven't personally come across anything like that, sorry, but thought I'd share this..... a million years ago when I did my general training, we each had to blind fold each other taking it in turn  to be led around the hospital - it was great for empathy!

Kind regards

Wendy

I have a case of a lady who is now almost totally blind (this has happened quite quickly) and I am just putting together a support package for her, so the OH part is in hand.

Her wonderful empathetic manager has asked me if I can recommend any books or other literature for the lay person, on what it is like to be blind so he can have some understanding on her situation as he feels it is outside his comfort zone. Has anyone come across anything I can suggest?

Many thanks
