medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Stephen, I took a quick look at the Systematic Collection (John Wortley, The Book of the Elders: Sayings of the Desert Fathers: the Systematic Collection, Collegeville: Liturgical Press, 2012) and found the following:

10.44
Isaac the Theban used to say: Do not bring children here, because four churches at Scete have become deserted because of children. (cf. Alphabetical Collection, Isaac the Theban 5).
 
18.16
Concerning the desolation of Scete [Abba Macarius] would say to the brothers... When you see children, take up your sheepskins and get away. (cf. Alphabetical Collection, Macarius the Egyptian 5).

I'm not sure why Wortley has translated "children" rather than "boys". -- Paul
