All first year dissertations have now been submitted here at Bournemouth. However, one of my students was able to submit 80/20 i.e. 8000 word dissertation and equivalent of 2000 words by means of a presentation.

In the past, I've tutored a student with it round the other way i.e. 2000 word lit review and equivalent of 8000 words by producing a film.

Currently, I'm also supporting a PhD student who is struggling with a 3000 word assignment about his research and I've asked him to go back to the supervisor and ask if he can submit a storyboard.

There are important caveats: firstly, all of these students are from our Media School where academics are more open to creativity in assessment.

Secondly, all of these students have dyslexia...my job is to support students with learning differences.

With regard to the latter, forthcoming changes to DSA infer that ALL degree programmes must offer alternative assessment because there will be less money to support academic writing skills. This doesn't mean that folk needing courses validated have to say what the alternative assessment entails - they simply have to agree that it will be offered where needed as a 'reasonable adjustment'.

Hope this is helpful. Happy to enter into further correspondence if required

Best wishes

Subject: dissertation question - informal research request

Hello all,

A quick question for some informal research going on here: Is anyone working with bachelor level dissertations where the assessment/submission mode is not wholly restricted to written ‘academic essay’ format? (E.g. perhaps includes use of multimedia such as film/blogs/video diaries/presentations etc?)

Many thanks!

John
