The 61st Annual Meeting of the Renaissance Society of America (Berlin, 26-28 March 2015)
Pietro Bembo’s Wor(l)ds: Literature, Linguistics, and Philology
Pietro Bembo (Venice 1470 - Rome 1547) is one of the most prolific and significant figures in Renaissance Italy: a humanist and a cardinal, a historian and a theorist of the vernacular, an editor and a philologist, as well as an author of letters, dialogs, and poems in both Latin and the vernacular, he had an extraordinary influence not only on Italian sixteenth-century literature, but also on Early Modern European culture.
Our panel(s) are envisioned with the goal of investigating the multifaceted aspects of Bembo’s literary production and artistic persona, focusing on topics such as: analysis and interpretations of his works, both in prose and in verses, through his autographs or annotated texts; his influence in sixteenth-century publishing industry; his role in the Roman Church in the period before the Council of Trent; his network with Italian and European humanists, through the perspective offered by his works and letters; the use of the Latin and the vernacular; the fortune and reception of his production in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Europe.
Scholars are invited to submit papers, in order to organize one or more panels on the following topics related to Bembo’s activity:
Proposals for this session should be submitted to the organizers: Francesco Lucioli, University of Cambridge ([log in to unmask]); Valeria Guarna, Università di Chieti-Pescara ([log in to unmask]), Pietro Giulio Riga, indipendent ([log in to unmask]).
Each proposal must include: paper title; abstract (no more than 150 words); and a brief CV (one page maximum).
