Dear Member
Last week, the Intellectual & Developmental Disability interest Group of the Royal Australia & New Zealand College of Psychiatrists launched a Guide for Providers on Accessible
Mental Health Services for People with an Intellectual Disability.
The Guide was developed by the Department of Developmental Neuropsychiatry at NSW and involved a core reference group with representatives from a range of key agencies, including
the APS (Nick Hagiliassis) and ASID (Keith McVilly). It provides practical advice on how to make mental health services more flexible and responsive to the needs of people with intellectual Disability..
It needs to be stressed that this is a very recent initiative and may take some time to be taken up by mental health services across the nation. Hopefully, as the ad used to say,
"It won't happen overnight, but it will happen!"
The Guide can be accessed electronically via:
Members are also reminded about the availability of the learning package for ID professionals also available via the UNSW disability network. This learning package is available
by registering (at no cost) at:
Morag Budiselik, Convener
