I was told about the map destruction by an old OS lag when I was in RCHME, though I don't think he was there then.

I don't think all the maps got destroyed as West Berkshire Museum (formerly Newbury Museum) has a collection Six Inch OS maps with annotations on them (including the initials OGSC and CWP - Charles Phillips I understand), and stamped 12 Jun 1948 Archaeology Branch, Ordnance Survey.  I'd actually be very interested to hear about other maps like this that are still in existence.  They certainly served the Newbury Museum as a kind of early SMR/HER, and were updated by curators until the 1990s - I have added all the annotations to the current West Berkshire HER.

Yes, I think the actual Division was set up in 1947? But as Ken notes Crawford had been the Archaeological Officer earlier, (from 1920). After a while he got one assistant (Grimes).

The OS Archaeology Division was set up after WWII, the 210 cards were developed by AS Phillips in the 1950s and were maintained until the 1980s.  The Division was split between the Royal Commissions in 1983 and the card record computerised.

Between the wars OGS Crawford, as OS Archaeology Officer, would send out OS 6 inch maps to various interested parties, museum curators, academics and so on, with a pro-forma stamped on the back.  They would mark up the maps and write the details on the back and return them to Crawford.

These maps were destroyed in 1940.

Yes that was my thinking also.  Northampton Museum and Birmingham Museums both had some sort of card index of sites and finds in their area and contributed to the Ordnance Survey records I think.  1933 does sound early.  I should know but when did the OS set up an Archaeology Division?

Potentially rather a broadening of the definition – Norwich was certainly not the only museum to hold a card index with general sites information alongside their own collections data, and there were also local maps held by the OS recorders in other museums….

Hi Heather,

This is interesting news!  Any idea when it became the SMR for Norfolk?  I’m not sure Don Benson knew about this…

I’m jumping in a bit late with this discussion, but the Norfolk HER was actually started by Roy Rainbird Clarke in 1933 when he became the Norfolk correspondent for the Ordnance Survey. He brought his sites and monuments index to the Norwich Castle Museum in 1946 when he became deputy curator and it was continued by the museum staff after his death, eventually becoming the Sites and Monuments Record.

Best wishes,

Heather

For anyone really interested Don Benson’s article regarding setting up of the SMR is available at http://oxoniensia.org/volumes/1972/benson2.pdf

He says that:

FOLLOWING the establishment of the Oxford City and County Museum

in 1965 one of several problems facing newcomers to the problems of the

history and archaeology of the region was the lack of any locally accessible and

comprehensive index of sites and finds. From time to time over the following

two years the scope and requirements of such an index were considered, and

various methods of data processing and information retrieval were investigated.

Sorry for the delay in responding to your comment, David.

Yes, Don Benson set up the Oxon SMR, the 1st local authority SMR, but in 1967 not 1965 – James Bond corrected me as I thought the same thing!

Thanks for the mention.

15 years is an achievement, but don't lose sight of the longer and more venerable heritage.  We must be approaching the 50th anniversary of Saint Don Benson starting the Oxfordshire SMR - was it 1965 ?  Susan Lisk: are you still there and can you enlighten / confirm ?  That should indeed be a celebration.

All best

Subject: Friday question - ideas for a birthday celebration

Dear all,

A Friday question with a bit of a difference but definitely on topic :)

This June the HER Forum list celebrates its 15th birthday. This is quite an achievement, especially as the list remains quite active.

It would be great if we could find a way to celebrate this achievement on the list - a digital celebration if you will. So for the week where the birthday falls we'd like to do some on-list activities. We'll be asking you to reminisce about your time on the list, what you like about it etc. (So make sure you save your stories for then!) We will also be asking for you ideas for the future for both the e-mail list and the Forum meetings.

However I'd like to throw this out to you, the subscribers, and ask what you would like to do to mark the occasion? Maybe a special Friday query session or a quiz of sorts?

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

all the best

Sarah
