You need to find out if parental supervision is suitable. We have very few this year but sometimes can be as many as 30-40.

* Some students do not live at home with parents.

* Some parents are involved with education and will have access to the exam paper.

* Some students have a very "difficult" home-life and this can prevent us from confidently endorsing home supervision.

Where I am not confident about adequate supervision we have a bank of staff who can offer supervision (and get a fee for it).

Don't forget that you are also signing the form!

Thanks for your advice everyone. I've decided to go with parental supervision - like many other centres, our staff aren't keen on supervising the students due to the exposure to accusations.

Regards
Lorna

We haven't got any this year, however, I have had many in the past. Years ago it was always a member of staff that supervised the students, however, following the boom in safeguarding, teachers did not feel comfortable taking students home with them. This is why the new parental supervision system was brought in.

In your case here Lorna, I would have been interested to see what the awarding body would have done if no member of staff were willing to supervise the students as is their prerogative. As far as I was concerned as long as the parent signed the declaration to say they would follow the regulations of the overnight supervision then the awarding body should approve.

Subject: Overnight supervision

Good Morning

We have one potential overnight supervision case for May and I was just seeking advice from centres who deal with these all the time. Do you always allow the parent to supervise the candidate? Do you do any research into suitability of their home environment?

We had one of these a couple of years ago and the JCQ would not allow the guardian to supervise since the candidate lived above a pub and they thought there was too much risk of the candidate breaking supervision. In this case a teacher undertook the supervision and took the student home with them.

Any advice much appreciated particularly since we're likely to get more and more of these.

Thanks
