The PAC marker is in common use by those who dig up road for a living it produces a yellow colour on tarmac with PAH content >1000 mg/kg. Obviously does not replace a good laboratory analysis, but it is a tool.

Given we produced about 2.5million gallons of tar per year, half of which was pitch, then there was a lot of coal tar based tarmac laid across the UK before we switched to petroleum based asphalt around 1980.

This is a growing area and one we have considered using our forensics methods on as part of our library of international coal tar samples we are accumulating.

The EA have a Position Statement of reuse of coal tar.

Interesting document, particularly point 26 which advises mixing of coal tar containing materials with others to ‘dilute’ PAH content.

As this is against Environment Agency policy, looks like the document is sorely in need of update.  Good contamination source reference doc though J.

Haven’t used the PAK spray product, or seen use proposed.

Perhaps Russell Thomas can advise?

I thought this may be of interest to the group:

I saw a reference to it in the latest edition of Geoscientist magazine.  Does anyone have any experience of using it?

Also, another useful publication when assessing tarmac/bitumen/asphalt disposal is:
