Seems sensible.  From the photo the floc size is too big for it to be Iron.

Hi

I E-Mailed Robin earlier to say that I have experienced similar flocs forming in alkaline waters due to the formation of insoluble carbonates, mainly calcium carbonate. This can happen especially where the water may have been in contact with fresh cementitious products.

If the pH is known, then an acidic/ near neutral water would suggest the floc may be due to the precipitation of iron (III), whereas a strongly alkaline water might suggest the formation of insoluble carbonates.

I would check for iron. It could be an iron (III) species arising from oxidation of Iron (II) in solution. Then again it could be something else.

Don’t suppose you have it in a clear container so we could see what colour it is, any idea of Geography and how long did it take to form?

I have seen Iron flocculate from historic hydrocarbon impacted gravels, see enclosed.

Peter

Dear All

Attached is a pic of a sample bottle when full, large flocks started forming and enlarging as time progressed.

Answers on a postcard for those of you who can work out, or know what’s going on and if they have experienced this before?

Regards,

RMack.
