Hi Liz
If considering the same, we would normally refer to UK, then EU then rest of the world guidance, in that order.
Kind regards

Subject: DDT screening value for residential use
Hi all
Just wondering if anyone has had any experience of deriving a screening value for DDT for residential land use?
We have undertaken an investigation at a former horticultural nursery where concentrations of DDE and DDT were found to range from 0.24mg/kg to 0.69mg/kg and 0.83mg/kg to 3.2mg/kg respectively. Three groundwater samples from the site were tested for DDT and had concentrations below detection limits (<0.02ug/l).
We haven’t been able to find a published UK guideline value for DDT or DDE. Through some internet based research we have so far found the following:
· The EA SR7 report for Priority Organic Pollutants contains physical-chemical data for DDT.
· A document published by the European Commission (European Commission (2007) EUR 22805 EN: Derivation Methods of Soil Screening Values in Europe. A Review and Evaluation of National Procedures Towards Harmonisation) compiles screening values for potentially unacceptable risk (residential use) used in European Countries. Finland, Poland and the Netherlands have screening values of 1.0mg/kg, 2.01mg/kg and 4.0mg/kg respectively for a sum of DDT, DDE and DDD compounds.
· A New Zealand guidance document (Methodology for Deriving Standards for Contaminants in Soil to Protect Human Health) provides intake values (TDI, background exposure), dermal absorption factors and bioconcentration factors for DDT and has derived a guideline value of 45mg/kg for DDT (based on residential use with 25% homegrown produce).
· Indiana Department of Environmental Management provides a residential screening level of 24mg/kg for DDT.
· The California Human Health Screening Level for DDT for residential land use is 1.6mg/kg, or 5.5mg/kg for sum of DDD, DDE and DDT.
These values appear to vary quite considerably and, whilst the concentrations identified on the site exceed some of the lower thresholds, they are significantly lower than some of the higher screening values.
It is proposed to develop the site with approx. 125 dwellings and therefore, should remediation be required, it could have significant cost implications to the developer.
Any suggestions / recommendations / useful discussion would be gratefully received.
Regards,
