Please could I possibly ask everyone to pass this BCS survey on to any IT
professionals you know.

Many thanks and apologies for any duplication in emails you may receive.

Best wishes

Subject: BCS Digital Accessibility Specialist Group - Survey

“There are over 11 million disabled people in the UK with a combined
spending power of £80 billion per annum. There are millions of other
individuals affected by sensory, physical and/or cognitive impairments,
including those resulting from the ageing process. All organisations now use
Information Technology (IT) to communicate externally and internally. Many
of the products and services we all use in daily life are either IT based or
are delivered using IT. Whilst this exploitation of IT helps deliver low
cost, yet function rich, digital solutions it can also create significant
barriers resulting in the exclusion of whole sectors of the population.

This exclusion results from the failure to provide digital solutions which
use the tools and techniques that allow people with impairments and/or
disabilities to access those solutions.

In this context accessibility is defined as the characteristics of
facilities, programs, and services that allow them to be entered or used by
all individuals despite visual, hearing, mobility, or other impairments

This survey is designed to assess the scale of this issue and the underlying
reasons for it in the UK, specifically the understanding that IT
professionals have of the issue.

The survey will only take about 10 minutes to complete and will help us
better understand why digital exclusion is a major issue. Please help us by
giving us 10 minutes of your time.

The survey will close on 8th June 2014 at noon.
