Parliamentary Archives - Archives Assistant (Graduate Trainee)
Fixed Term Appointment 15 September 2014 to 31 August 2015. Salary range £21,023 - £25,922 per annum (House of Lords C3 band)
The Parliamentary Archives provides a records management and archives service for both Houses of Parliament. The Parliamentary Archives has an opportunity for a self-motivated graduate planning a career in archives to gain work experience
in a stimulating environment, maintaining and developing our archives services. The job will be on a fixed-term basis from 15 September 2014 to 31 August 2015. This training post is intended to provide a year's experience for someone requiring that as a condition
for entry to a recognised UK archive course and candidates will be expected to start the application process during the training period. The post is not designed for students already enrolled in full or part-time archives courses, including distance learning
courses.
Based in the Public Services & Outreach Team and reporting to the Senior Archivist, the post holder will be involved in a wide range of professional work and be provided with good developmental opportunities. The work will include accessioning
and cataloguing of Committee papers and other Parliamentary records using CALM to office procedure and international archival standards, answering of public enquiries in all media, invigilation in the search room, and assistance with outreach work such as
the creation of exhibition displays and website work.
You must have a good degree, preferably in History; a determination to undertake a post-graduate archive qualification following the placement; a commitment to archive work as a career, perhaps gained through volunteering; excellent
IT skills; excellent written and oral communication skills; strong team-working skills; the ability to organise your own time while keeping to schedules and meeting deadlines; and the ability to assimilate and interpret a wide range of sources. An awareness
of archival cataloguing systems would be desirable.
