Please find below details of an exciting PhD research opportunity at City University London.
Background
City University London
is a global university committed to academic excellence with a focus on
business and the professions and an enviable central London location.
The University attracts over 17,000 students (40% at
postgraduate level) from more than 150 countries and academic staff from
over 50 countries. Its academic range is broadly-based with world
leading strengths in business; law; health sciences; engineering;
mathematical sciences; informatics; social sciences; and the arts,
including journalism and music.
City is in the top 5% of universities in the world according to The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2012/13
and in the top 30 UK Universities according to The Times Higher Education Table of Tables 2012
. The Sunday Times University Guide 2013
places City 9th in the UK for graduate-level jobs and 12th for graduate
employment. Fifteen of its subject areas were identified as undertaking
world-leading or internationally-excellent research in the last
Research Assessment Exercise.
City has embarked on a strategic transformation to strengthen still further its position as a leading global University.
The Measurement Techniques in Vision Laboratory at City
University London provides a lively research environment with a unique
mixture of vision scientists, ophthalmologists, computer scientists and
mathematicians. For more: www.staff.city.ac.uk/d.crabb
A full time PhD studentship in “data science” is now available (October 1st 2014) in this lab focusing on:Using ‘big data’ to examine eyes and health
Eye clinics in the UK record thousands of measurements every
week on patients with chronic eye disease like glaucoma and macular
degeneration. Many of the measurement are complex, often image based,
yielding vast data sets. We plan to link these repositories of data to
other large socioeconomic and health databases. We then aim to develop
tools to interrogate and visualise these ‘big data’ for various
stakeholders including the NHS. Other projects in our lab, especially
those that consider eye movements, yield vast data sets; these
experiments also need creative input from an able ‘Data Scientist’.
Person Specification
The studentship
Training in software engineering, programming, statistics or
computer science (at MSc level) would be ideal, but we seek an
inventive, able “Data Scientist” who can demonstrate real enthusiasm for
this exciting and worthwhile project. Detailed knowledge about vision
or eyes will not be required, but a flair for creatively analysing data
is essential.
Additional Information
Results from this PhD are likely to generate considerable interest
and will lead to presentations at conferences in the US and Europe;
extensive travel funding is available. The 3-year studentship is worth
£16K pa (tax free), with all fees for PhD registration paid. (Non EU
students would have to subsidise the relevant fees). An extra add on of
£3K pa is on offer to attract exceptional candidates.
Applications (CV, including names of two referees and a
statement of interest about the project) should be submitted by email
