A full time PhD studentship in “data science” is now available (October 1st 2014) in this lab focusing on:
Using ‘big data’ to examine eyes and health
Eye clinics in the UK record thousands of measurements every
week on patients with chronic eye disease like glaucoma and macular
degeneration. Many of the measurement are complex, often image based,
yielding vast data sets. We plan to link these repositories of data to
other large socioeconomic and health databases. We then aim to develop
tools to interrogate and visualise these ‘big data’ for various
stakeholders including the NHS. Other projects in our lab, especially
those that consider eye movements, yield vast data sets; these
experiments also need creative input from an able ‘Data Scientist’.
Person Specification
The studentship
Training in software engineering, programming, statistics or
computer science (at MSc level) would be ideal, but we seek an
inventive, able “Data Scientist” who can demonstrate real enthusiasm for
this exciting and worthwhile project. Detailed knowledge about vision
or eyes will not be required, but a flair for creatively analysing data
is essential.
Additional Information
Results from this PhD are likely to generate considerable interest
and will lead to presentations at conferences in the US and Europe;
extensive travel funding is available. The 3-year studentship is worth
£16K pa (tax free), with all fees for PhD registration paid. (Non EU
students would have to subsidise the relevant fees). An extra add on of
£3K pa is on offer to attract exceptional candidates.
