Lecturer (Medical Statistics or Health Econometrics) £42,563 to £48,610
per annum
and Research Fellow (Health Economics) £36,378 to £41,313 per annum

Department of Health Services Research and Policy
London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine

Closing Date: Wednesday 04 June 2014

Following successful fellowship applications in the area of analytical
methods for health economic evaluation, we wish to appoint new
researchers at Lecturer and Research Fellow level. The successful
applicants will join a growing team of statisticians and health
economists working on improving and applying quantitative methods to
health economic evaluations that use randomised trials, and
observational studies. The posts offer excellent opportunities for
researchers to develop their own research agendas in methodological and
applied research at a London-based university. LSHTM has large
programmes of work in health economics, health policy and medical
statistics. We have excellent collaborations with researchers in the UK
and the United States whose expertise is in improving analytical
methods, for studies that can directly inform health policy.
The posts will focus on improving methods for handling the problems of
confounding, treatment switching, missing data and external validity in
the context of health economic evaluation. The posts are funded
alongside a senior NIHR fellowship that aims to improve the relevance of
economic evaluations for decision-making. The post holders will consider
alternative methods for studies with patient-level data from trials and
observational studies, in for example evaluating interventions in
emergency medicine, critical care, elective surgery, and alternative
pay-for-performance schemes. The post holders will be encouraged to
develop their analytical skills in extending approaches proposed in the
general methodological literature to address additional challenges
typically raised in cost-effectiveness analyses. The post holders will
lead aspects of project dissemination including writing peer-reviewed
journal articles.

The posts will be based in the Department of Health Services Research
and Policy (HSRP), LSHTM and will involve close collaboration with
leading statisticians from the Department of Medical Statistics (James
Carpenter and Michael Kenward), the University of California, Berkeley
(Jasjeet Sekhon), and with experts in health policy (Nicholas Mays).

For the lecturer post, you will have a PhD in medical statistics,
econometrics or a related discipline, and publications in high-ranking,
peer-reviewed journals. A demonstrable interest in improving
quantitative methods is essential. This post is for four years in the
first instance. The salary will be on the Academic Pathway in the range
£42,463 to £48,610 (Lecturer, Grade 7) per annum inclusive. The post
is based in London. To apply for the role of Lecturer, click on the link

For the research fellow post, you will have a Master’s degree and a PhD
(or equivalent) in health economics, econometrics, or a related
discipline. Previous experience of applying advanced quantitative
methods is essential. This post is for three years in the first
instance. The salary will be on the Academic Pathway in the range
£36,378 to £41,313 (Research Fellow, Grade 6) per annum inclusive.
