Dear colleagues,

the Institute for German Studies at the University of Birmingham, in partnership with Bundesstiftung zur Aufarbeitung der SED-Diktatur, Berlin, presents an exciting new exhibition:

‘DICTATORSHIP AND DEMOCRACY IN THE AGE OF EXTREMES: SPOTLIGHTS ON THE HISTORY OF EUROPE IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY’.

Monday 5th to Friday 16th May 2014, 9.00 am – 17.00 pm
University of Birmingham, Muirhead Tower (Ground Floor Foyer),
Edgbaston, Birmingham, B15 2TT.

The exhibition portrays Europe’s twentieth century as a dramatic history of the struggle between freedom and tyranny, democracy and dictatorship. The exhibition is inspired by the upcoming series of major anniversaries that illustrate the linkages between national histories during the ‘Century of Extremes’: the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War I takes place in 2014; 75 years will have passed since the beginning of World War II; 25 years since the German ‘Peaceful Revolution’ of 1989; and 10 years since the eastward enlargement of the European Union.

The exhibition presents almost 190 photographs, images and text from numerous European archives. It portrays Europe’s twentieth century as a dramatic history of the struggle between freedom and tyranny, democracy and dictatorship, inviting visitors to take the historical pulse of the preceding century.

‘Dictatorship and Democracy in the Age of Extremes’ is an ideal medium for sparking discussion about the history of dictatorship and democracy. Its content is appropriate to a range of academic disciplines, areas of study and interest.

The exhibition is presented as an open-access event and is not restricted to the University of Birmingham learning community.

Visitors are invited to attend introductory talks on the exhibition and the history it represents on the 8th and 13th May 2014 from 2.00 – 3.00 pm, with refreshments and further viewing and discussion until 4.30 pm. Registration for these visits should be made by Thursday 1st May through Ivor Bolton, Institute for German Studies. Email: [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>
