Hi Kambiz,

This is an unfortunate bug in maxfilter version 2.2.15. It occurs when:

- There is discrepancy of isotrak and initial hpifit in 1-2 coils, and

- HPI amplitude extraction or coil fitting fails repeatedly within the tSSS buffer (here 4 s).

We have a fix coming later this year, but I don’t know the exact schedule yet.

You can try: 1) option hpicons to improve the initial consistency, 2) skip the problematic time interval(s), or 3) use previous version (2.2.10).

Installation of the new release wipes out 2.2.10, but I can send the binary by email and you can execute it e.g. from $(HOME)/bin.

Please report these problems also to [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>.

Best regards, Jukka

Subject: Maxfilter exits with code 11 - unable to extract HPI amp, determine transformation

Hi all,
I am using MF version 2.2.15 on a MEG(306)+EEG(60) channels data set acquired at 1 kHz, with 0.1-300 Hz band filter.
I am encountering a Maxfilter failure (exit code 11) roughly halfway through a combined tSSS and movement compensation procedure. Before exit the program spits out:

Note! Discrepancy of HPI coil 3 isotrak and hpifit is 10.4 mm!
Note! Discrepancy of HPI coil 4 isotrak and hpifit is 6.8 mm!
Warning: HPI amp extraction failed (t=325.000)!
Warning: 2/4 acceptable hpi fits found, cannot determine the transformation! (t = 349.000)
Warning: 1/4 acceptable hpi fits found, cannot determine the transformation! (t = 350.000)
Warning: 1/4 acceptable hpi fits found, cannot determine the transformation! (t = 351.000)
Warning: 0/4 acceptable hpi fits found, cannot determine the transformation! (t = 352.000)
Simplex: nr of eval (1001) exceeds maximum (1000)!
Warning: 0/4 acceptable hpi fits found, cannot determine the transformation! (t = 353.000)
Simplex: nr of eval (1001) exceeds maximum (1000)!
Warning: 0/4 acceptable hpi fits found, cannot determine the transformation! (t = 354.000)
Simplex: nr of eval (1002) exceeds maximum (1000)!
Warning: 0/4 acceptable hpi fits found, cannot determine the transformation! (t = 355.000)
Program died due to signal 11, all output files were deleted!
Core dump disabled.

The Maxfilter command and relevant arguments are: maxfilter-2.2 -v -f ... -o ... -st 4 -corr 0.98 -in 8 -out 3 -regularize in -hpie 20 -hpig 0.8 -origin 0 0 40 -movecomp -hpisubt amp -hpistep 200 -frame head. I'v also tried using the arguments: -hpicoils 4, -st 60, -st 10 all with the same result; in fact only with -hpcoils 4 & -st 4 can I get more information (as above). I suspect the HPI coils failed at the indicated time points and the head location cannot be determined for an appropriate duration in the st buffer. Is this correct? More importantly, is there a fix? apart from not doing movement compensation.

Thanks in advance
Kambiz
