I had the requirement here at Diamond for the ability to simply provide 'username' instead of the full 'username@realm' to pam_gss as part of the console login, to allow our local users to simply continue as they have before.
Luke Howard, the author of pam_gss, suggested the following neat trick (although I bet everyone who uses Kerberos probably already knew this):
- Edit /etc/krb5.conf
- In it add the following:
[appdefaults]
eap_gss = { default_realm = <your default realm, e.g diamond.ac.uk> }
- Save the file
- Try to log in with a username sans realm.
It should authenticate on your RADIUS server with the complete 'username@realm' name, where 'realm' is the default_realm specified.
For those wishing to implement Moonshotted console access, this will probably be even more transparent to the users, although this does have the after effect that short-circuiting pam_gss to authenticate locally won't work anymore. You win some, you lose some. :-)
