Alison's list of "suspect keywords" is truly hilarious and gives a fascinating insight into the things which the Taxpayers' Alliance detests (like Art, Awareness, Culture, Europe, Insight, Rights, Recycling.....) The hostility to Equality and Diversity Officers is reminiscent of the government's "red tape challenge" a while back. If you remember, after the invitation to the public to propose ways of axing this burdensome legislation, the Equalities page was swamped by protests from large numbers of people saying, in effect, "keep your dirty hands off our law"! I just checked the site ( http://bit.ly/1k4ib13  ) and in fact Equalities has one of the lowest percentages of items to be scrapped in the interest of cutting red tape (13%, just above Pensions with 12%). Evidently the news hasn't reached the Taxpayers Alliance.

It's a bit sour that the Oxford Mail chooses to spotlight on the three Equality and Diversity Officers, rather than the twelve Communications Managers  - or the three Marketing Persons. (Can anyone tell me what health authorities "market"?) As Alison suggests, examples could be stockpiled to show (if we ever need to) that Equality and Diversity officers have a job well worth doing. (Perhaps emphasising the wide range of groups that they cover, to show what a bunch of wheelchair-bashers the Taxpayers' Alliance are.) Probably the story will die a natural death - if not, this seems to be the way to go. And surely those twelve Communications Managers could be asked to give a helping hand?

Perhaps a pro-active approach is worth considering – preparing examples of what communications managers, equality and diversity officers etc have done which readers can easily relate to, for instance how drives to increase take-up of cancer screening have helped some families escape the tragedy of late diagnosis, in case the media run further stories on this.

HEALTH bosses were yesterday accused of wasting more than £850,000 a year on “non-jobs” like equality and diversity officers.

New figures obtained by the TaxPayers Alliance show £874,548 was spent last year for salaries and pensions for 21 roles at four authorities which provide county NHS care.
