Maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. Findings from WHO survey

[cid:image004.[log in to unmask]]

The Multicountry Survey on Maternal and Newborn Health is the largest study to date assessing the management of severe maternal complications and the prevalence of maternal near miss. New analyses of the study data set covering a wide range of issues, including the major causes of maternal mortality and severe morbidity and social determinants of health, are presented in this special BJOG supplement freely available from the link below.

Unsafe abortion: did you know? WHO publishes new fact sheet

[cid:image005.[log in to unmask]]

Around 22 million unsafe abortions take place each year, almost all in developing countries with the number of related deaths accounting 13% of all maternal deaths. Some 5 million women are admitted to hospital as a result of unsafe abortion every year and more than 3 million women who have complications following unsafe abortion do not receive care.
To highlight the problem, WHO has published a new online fact sheet that explains the nature and scope of the problems and WHO’s response.

WHO Guidelines on violence against women underpin Indian health
sector response

[cid:image002.[log in to unmask]]

19-20 March: India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the World Health Organization jointly hosted a consultation to launch and deliberate on the implementation of India’s National guidelines on medico-legal care for survivors/victims of sexual violence. WHO clinical and policy guidelines on responding to intimate partner violence and sexual violence underpin these guidelines which form the basis of India’s response to sexual violence involving the health, police, legal and social protection sectors.
