I can only think of an English and
fictional analogue: the episode in the Wife of Bath’s prologue when she
rips a page out of Jankyn’s book and throws it on the fire, upon which he
beats her.
Being a librarian, I can see his point of
view; although I don’t think I’d
resort to violence... ;-)

Dear Colleagues,
A cross-posted query from MEDFEM:
Does anyone know of any sources related to family/domestic violence in
late-14th and/or early-15th century
Sources on witchcraft in this period/place are also welcome, of course, but
I've got more to go on concerning witchcraft than domestic violence.
Notably, this case was not tried by the church -- no heresy, though
plenty of diabolical enchantments -- but by the local civil court.
Thanks for any leads,
Lois Leveen, Ph.D.
