Again having used both my feeling is that Mapinfo is great and quick for doing the simple things such as polygonising etc but once you get beyond this and want to do more ArcGIS is far better.  Creating a layout in Mapinfo is such a faff whereas it is so simple in ArcGIS and georectifying is a lot easier in ArcGIS and doesn’t distort the grid.

Having used both, I definitely disagree with Nick. MapInfo is one of the clunkiest and least intuitive pieces of software that I’ve ever had the misfortune to use. I think this just goes to show how much it comes down to personal preference when it comes to choosing software.

As an aside, I’d certainly recommend people downloading and giving QGIS a try (http://www.qgis.org/en/site/). It’s not as slick as ArcGIS and the like, but it’s very capable and more importantly free.
